The Impressions With Curtis Mayfield Early yearsJerry Butler and Curtis Mayfield met while singing in the same Chicago church choir. After singing in a number of local gospel groups, the two of them joined a doo-wop group called the Roosters in 1957, whose members included Chattanooga, Tennessee natives Sam Gooden, Richard Brooks, and his brother Arthur Brooks. By 1958, the Roosters had a new manager in Eddie Thomas, a record deal with Vee-Jay Records, and a new name: Jerry Butler & the Impressions. "People Get Ready" is a 1965 single by The Impressions, and the title track from the People Get Ready album. The single is the group's best-known hit, reaching number-three on the Billboard R&B chart and number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100. The gospel-influenced track was a Curtis Mayfield composition that displayed the growing sense of social and political awareness in his writing. People get ready
There's a train a-coming You don't need no baggage You just get on board All you need is faith To hear the diesels humming Don't need no ticket You just thank the Lord So people get ready
For the train to Jordan Picking up passengers' coast to coast Faith is the key Open the doors and board 'em There's hope for all Among those loved the most There ain't no room for the hopeless sinner
Who would hurt all mankind just to save his own (believe me now) Have pity on those Whose chances grow thinner For there's no hiding place against the Kingdom's Throne So people get ready There's a train a-comin' You don't need no baggage You just get on board All you need is faith To hear the diesels humming Don't need no ticket You just thank the Lord
